Eating, Sleeping and Playing Mass Effect 2. That is an almost exhaustive list of my past 48 hours, excluding getting ready for bed, bathing and my trips to the toilet. I feel like I have made pretty good time time so far, having both made it through at least half of the main story and completed all the character loyalty quests. I am really excited about continuing my character from the first game, and while the game is somewhat dated now and I don’t plan on making a review for it, I do want to give huge praise to Bioware for pulling the character import feature off; it really enhances the experience.
For those unfamiliar, in Mass Effect 2, and as is confirmed for Mass Effect 3 which is slated for release next March, you may choose to import a character from a Mass Effect save. The character import also alters aspects of the game based around decisions made in the first game. While the majority of the main story is unaffected by these changes, the decisions made in the previous installment are still frequently referenced, and it really adds to the continuity and flow of the story.
I’m going to be honest, the story is the only real reason to play the series thus far. The gameplay comes together fine, and is actually quite engaging, however, it is nothing that I haven’t played before the game itself is just a cut and paste collage of role playing game elements, and shooter mechanics. The notable exception to this is the cinematic portions of the game, which fall under the category of story elements. The series thus far, again aside from the cinematics, aren’t terribly innovative. I can live with that. To confess, I honestly believe that the original Mass Effect was the only game in which I was thoroughly excited to see the next dialogue sequence.
Anyway, sorry for sidetracking a bit there, just wanted to share my brief opinions thus far, as well as mention that I’ll hopefully finish the game by Thursday. I am really excited for Mass Effect 3, and I also apologize that I am too distracted by Mass Effect 2 to give an update on gaming news. Getting up tomorrow and playing right away, just like is morning. I’ll be giving gaming news updates an update as soon as I finish the game.
Sidenote. Miranda is a total bitch. Apparently shes supposed to be a superior woman, but she has buck teeth, a British accent and an ego the size of Texas.
